Premature Ejaculation

What is Premature Ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation (PE) means that the man ejaculates or (comes) too quickly. It is one of the most common sexual problems and it is estimated that around 10% of men have or have had this problem.

It is more common in younger men and usually in this presentation it improves with age.

Due to the varied and complex presentation it is almost impossible to accurately give a true definition of PE. (Some couples satisfaction in sexual activity will inevitably be different to others).

Some studies have shown that the average male with PE to last an average 1.8 minutes while the Normal male could last an average of 7.3minutes. This is very variable.

PE should be assessed and distinguished from Erectile Dysfunction. Some men with ED have problems with maintaining the erection long enough for penetration and develop a degree of PE as a result of over arousal or” rushing” the activity in order to ejaculate before they lose the erection. The age, sexual experience and recent sexual activity should also be considered. Also the partner should be considered in the terms of their sexual experience, sexual ability and sexual demands.
